Assassin's Creed follows the story of various members of the Assassin Brotherhood in different historical eras and places. The Assassins' primary concern is the freedom of all people. To achieve this, the brotherhood attempts to overpower the Templar Order, an organization that believes in peace through control. The games often include historical events and figures, such as Leonardo da Vinci, Cleopatra, or Charles Dickens.
In the present-day story, individuals access the memories of their ancestors via their DNA in a machine called the Animus, which enables them to relive moments in their ancestors' lives. This allows them to discover powerful, ancient artifacts originally used by a now extinct group of people, The Ones Who Came Before (or: The Precursors).
